ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Wendy Eisenberg - "Viewfinder"

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Wendy Eisenberg - "Viewfinder"

Viewfinder is an album built on contrasts - the differences between what’s seen and what is, demonstrated through eclectic and often bewildering improvisations. There’s so much virtuosity on display, but it’s all in service of creating a sound with a constantly shifting restlessness.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Goat Girl - "Below The Waste"

ALBUM OF THE WEEK: Goat Girl - "Below The Waste"

Goat Girl’s third album Below the Waste is their first as a trio, but they’ve developed a sound that might take upwards of ten musicians to recreate, where folk textures and gorgeous harmonies are polluted by a sludge of dreary post-punk. It runs a hefty sixteen songs and with this there’s variety and experimentation in spades.

Claire Rousay - "Sentiment" | Album Review

Claire Rousay - "Sentiment" | Album Review

Ambient musician claire rousay’s first proper foray into more traditional song forms, sentiment, nonetheless opens with a spoken sample, “It’s 4pm on a Monday and I cannot stop crying.” Perhaps the clip makes sense for an artist who is best known for her work trying to coax emotionality out of the sounds of mundane tasks and ideas.

Couch Slut - "You Could Do It Tonight" | Album Review

Couch Slut - "You Could Do It Tonight" | Album Review

There’s a clarity to You Could Do It Tonight that sets it apart from much of Couch Slut’s earlier work. For one, as heavy as the mix is, there’s a ton of definition to it. While there’s undoubtedly charm to awful mixing on a hardcore record, the ideas here are well served to be heard in full force.

Al Harper - "Plaster of Paris" | Post-Trash Premiere

Al Harper - "Plaster of Paris" | Post-Trash Premiere

Al Harper has been a part of the San Francisco DIY scene for years now, often working with noisy lo-fi projects like Tony Jay and Eternal Drag. Rid of Me - "Access To The Lonely" LP | Post-Trash Premiere

Rid of Me - "Access To The Lonely" LP | Post-Trash Premiere

Access to the Lonely is certainly aggressive, but it lashes in a way that’s too carefully considered to be pure rage. Sure, “Libertarian Noise Rock” flies off the handle, with a shredding 80s thrash metal guitar solo from World Below’s Alex Cheskis, but many of the album’s best moments are more patient.

Patter - "Patter Theme 2" | Album Review

Patter - "Patter Theme 2" | Album Review

Patter Theme 2, the second EP by the titular Chicago indie rockers Patter, wastes very little time at just fourteen minutes. While much of the trio’s guitar textures, rhythmic shifts, and understated vocals are reminiscent of 90s post-rock acts like Tortoise or June of 44, the project’s pace is anything but.

Tuxis Giant - "The Old House" LP | Post-Trash Premiere

Tuxis Giant - "The Old House" LP | Post-Trash Premiere

Tuxis Giant lead singer and guitarist Matt O’Connor says they don’t love the idea of The Old House being their pandemic record. Even though the eleven songs were recorded in a studio in Boston, the dusty Vermont Cabin they were written in by O’Connor throughout 2020 couldn’t quite be shaken out of the record.

Duffy x Uhlmann - "In The Spirit of Fair Play" | Post-Trash Premiere

Duffy x Uhlmann - "In The Spirit of Fair Play" | Post-Trash Premiere

Meg Duffy and Gregory Uhlmann have recorded an album under the name Duffy x Uhlmann. The project is a tranquil folksy wander, just the two of them playing simple hypnotic interlocking lines that develop a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It rarely feels busy, even if there is subtle virtuosity in their musical chemistry.

Sprain Discuss Their Sophomore Album "The Lamb as Effigy" | Post-Trash Feature

Sprain Discuss Their Sophomore Album "The Lamb as Effigy" | Post-Trash Feature

Sprain put out their debut album in September of 2020, a bleak and grinding affair that mostly consisted of angular riffs, crawling tempos, and walls of feedback. While the pandemic kept them from touring upon its release, as restrictions eased, they toured the US, all the while working on their follow-up The Lamb as Effigy, which is out September 1st via The Flenser. Alex Kent spoke to Post-Trash about the album and the process behind it.

Fred Cracklin - "Head Meet Concrete" | Post-Trash Premiere

Fred Cracklin - "Head Meet Concrete" | Post-Trash Premiere

Fred Cracklin are about as relentless and absurd as one could hope for from a band called Fred Cracklin. A guitar and drums math-noise duo in the vein of Hella and Lightning Bolt, they’ve released three albums since 2018, and are now back with the song “Head Meet Concrete,” their first release since their 2021 split with First Children.

Sarah Morrison - "Gray Apples" | Post-Trash Premiere

Sarah Morrison - "Gray Apples" | Post-Trash Premiere

On her forthcoming debut, Attachment Figure, Sarah Morrison aims to capture the unease of hearing the score of a horror film. She’s previously toured as the keyboardist for Locate S,1, and is now working alongside producers and fellow Locate S,1 members Ross Brand and Clayton Rychlik (who also played in Of Montreal).

Talking Kind - "Trouble" (feat. Radiator Hospital & The Goodbye Party) Video | Post-Trash Premiere

Talking Kind - "Trouble" (feat. Radiator Hospital & The Goodbye Party) Video | Post-Trash Premiere

“Trouble” is a light and hooky indie rock track, not quite twee, but certainly not aggressive either. The melodic bass immediately takes center stage, locking in with simple folk-rock drums and acoustic guitar strums. Pat Graham describes how he’s “in trouble all of the time,” because he’s the talking kind, hence the band name.

Me Lost Me - "Heat!" | Post-Trash Premiere

On RPG, she aims to pay tribute to the art of world-building and storytelling, drawing a throughline from folk songs and folktales to ambient electronica and video games.

Squid - "O Monolith" | Album Review

Squid - "O Monolith" | Album Review

Like many of their contemporaries, Squid have drifted into a sound that’s less direct and angry with more prog rock influence. While Black Midi and Black Country, New Road have veered hard into theatricality, whether it be through absurd virtuosity or intense emotionality, Squid make the move in a way that retains more indie-rock dejection.

The Lentils - "Easy On The Shadow Work" | Post-Trash Premiere

The Lentils - "Easy On The Shadow Work" | Post-Trash Premiere

While the last couple records were very low-key, recorded almost entirely by Luke Csehak in his home, their forthcoming eighth album, Hello Jane Goodall, Are You Listening?, aims to capture the band’s live sound by featuring different line-ups of the band recorded across four different LA studios.
