Salt Lick - "The Gift of Missing" LP | Post-Trash Premiere

Simply put, Salt Lick is a die-hard group of musicians within the Seattle DIY scene. Over the past half decade, the band has been sizzling and simmering a handful of slow-burn releases. Salt Lick never fails to impress live and have certainly elevated their songwriting and studio chops with their most recent release, The Gift of Missing.

In “Summertime” noodly bass and polyrhythmic drums jumpstart the song and remain almost unchanged. Aside from a couple of quick transitions, the rhythm section holds down a jam, alongside guitar parts that revolve around reiterations, post-punk chord progressions, and a solo section.

Cheekface’s cover takes this classic Elliott Smith song and conveys a grittier approach. The tempo is slightly ramped up and acoustic guitars are replaced by fuzzy electric tones, while maintaining a majority of the original, memorable riffs.

On the whole, in the shape of... doesn’t latch directly onto any single genre. So Totally comically tagged “fuck a genre” on the album’s Bandcamp page. Wasting no time at all the song casts out a hook driven by syncopated drums, bass, and rhythm guitar, alongside a warbling guitar lead. The distorted nature of the bass tone reveals itself on the upswing of the intro, which marches forward as vocals enter with a few sparsely punk nuances breaking up the guitar chords.
