It takes a lot of chutzpah for a band to dub themselves the progenitors of a new genre, but Seattle’s Black Ends are up to the task, trading in what they call “gunk pop.” A sideways inversion of pop-punk, deep from the Pacific Northwest ethos of bluesy, heavy grunge and raucous, righteous Riot Girl.
Black Ends have spent the past five years establishing themselves as one of the Pacific Northwest’s most exciting new bands. Known for both explosive live shows and their lovingly dubbed “gunk pop” sound, the trio have long been one to watch, and they’re about to up to ante with their long awaited full length debut, Psychotic Spew.
The self-described “gunk pop” project of Seattle-based songwriter Nicolle Swims, Black Ends consists of Swims on guitar and vocals, Jonny Modes on drums, and Ben Swanson on bass. Despite postponed festivals and cancelled tours, Black Ends are still back with 13+ minutes of their finest and “gunkiest” work yet via Stay Evil.
