Janelane has been a mainstay in their home city of Los Angeles for the last half-dozen years, sharing stages with the likes of Cherry Glazer, Diet Cig, and Surf Curse. However, it’s been quite some time since we’ve heard some new tunes from them. Their last release, 2015’s Peaches and Cream, featured two tracks brimming with melancholy and ringing guitar pop sensibilities. Now, the band is back with a brand new single, “14 Days,” that expands on this hook-filled sad-pop oriented foundation.
“14 Days” oozes with the hazy aura of nostalgia, as it features the perfect kind of shimmery guitar tones and punchy rhythms that’ll naturally induce fond memories of warm summer nights. It’s a fickle kind of reminiscing, though, as while these sonic elements may trigger memories of happy times, the perspective is delivered from a place of heartache and sorrow triggered by love lost. Frontperson Sophie Negrini wears her heart on her sleeve with confessional lyrics that are profound and delivered with an unwavering emotional authenticity that’s ever-present. The song’s heart-tugging melody and the crescendo in Negrini’s voice as she belts the chorus: “14 days in a row, just enough to fall back to square one,” is emblematic of the rocky road to recovery after heartbreak. Just when you think you’ve moved on, memories pull you back in again.
