Four years ago, while working as a publicist, I worked a campaign for Jacksonville’s Sea Cycles. The key to picking a project for me was to find records and I liked and music that was interesting (and increasingly so after prolonged repeats). Sea Cycles' hit both requirements thanks to a borderline unclassifiable sound that hung in the ether between experimental psych, art rock, synth pop, emo, and post-rock. Their album Ground & Air was a strange mix of elements that came together in its own earthy soundscapes, something that was unique and well-constructed, if not outwardly accessible. While I haven’t heard much of the band since, the band are getting ready to release a new record, and before that, “Quota,” a new single.
Their latest offers a more pop-centric sound but the quartet are sticking with their experimental hybrid of genres. There’s windswept synths that whir back and forth in delicate layers, spiraling guitars pulled gently into easy vibing melodies, and vocals that swoon and croon just above everything. The drums are unpredictable and disjointed, each rhythmic pattern stuttering in time with bleeps and bloops to keep you just slightly off guard, attentive, and ready to see just where their groove is headed. From what sounds to be backward recorded cymbals crashes to shimmering harmonies, Sea Cycles are offering a more immediate sound while stay true to their expansive roots.
